It is evident that diabetic retinopathy is one of the most disabling complications of diabetes and the leading cause of new cases of vision loss amongst adults. However, there is less evidence for a specific form of lipid/fat which presents in the eye skin and plays a major role in preventing the diabetic retinopathy.
According to a recent study published in the Diabetes, researchers claimed that elongation of very long-chain fatty acids protein 4 (ELOVL4) mediated production of the very long-chain (VLC ≥26) ceramides stabilizes the tight junctions and prevents diabetes-induced retinal vascular permeability.
