Complications with or without a medical intervention are common. Often, unintended consequences may arise during providing care to a patient because of systemic deficiencies, circumstances and/or human errors. Malpractice or clinical negligence are less common but they also contribute to unwanted complications. In the UK, where I am practicing now, all NHS (Govt) organisations provide indemnity to the doctors against financial claims by the patients.

In addition, most doctors join Medical Protection or Defence organisations which cover for any legal advise, fee or claims that may arise from a complication suffered by a patient during the care. Having practiced for over 30 years now I have personally benefitted from these facilities on more than one occasions. I lack personal knowledge of any such arrangements in India.
