Doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar successfully resuscitated a 24-year-old army soldier using an extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) procedure about 1.5 hours after he suffered a cardiac arrest. The soldier arrived at AIIMS in critical condition due to heart failure and experienced cardiac arrest shortly after admission. Doctors performed conventional CPR for 40 minutes to resuscitate him. However, no cardiac activity was detected.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, a multidisciplinary team led by an intensivist and ECMO specialist initiated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation 80 minutes after the cardiac arrest.
