Every citizen of our country is bestowed with the right of private defence implying that one could do everything possible to ward off immediate or impending perceived threat to his or her life. I have not read the law, but as a normal person of average prudence interpret this as that any Indian including doctors, have all the right and means to defend his or her body from any immediate danger. Recently, one of the doctors brandished his licensed pistol in his chamber to wean away the marauders after allegations of negligence. There was a lot of hue and cry in the media and even in an own fraternity.

Perhaps this is the first such case which I have heard/read in my life. Do we have equal rights as others? If a gangster or businessman can use a weapon in imminent danger, why not the doctors whose life is much more precious where the state has also invested in his or her training of the…
