Recently, my post "Doctors, A Soft Target Amongst Professionals" attracted a warm discussion on violence against doctors. Amidst the varied mentions on communication gap, inept hospital management, lack of sophistication among patients, and deficient political will and legislature - it has been widely opined elsewhere that a feeling of hopelessness contributes to the rising episodes of violence. The patient feels that they have nowhere to go, no rules safeguarding them and adequately punishing guilty/negligent doctors, or no compassionate ear to listen to their grievances - which makes them desperate and incites them to take things into their own hands.

What do you think of this side of the story? How much can this be seen to be contributing to the present situation? Do laws in favour of patients need to be better demarcated?
