The scenario of drug-induced gout : Loop and thiazide diuretics - are considered to be the most common modifiable risk factors for secondary gout especially in the elderly and in women. If a patient has a history of gout then treatment with diuretics are best avoided. If gout develops then it is prudent to stop diuretics and initiate alternative therapy for hypertension.

Losartan should be considered as it has uricosuric properties. If diuretic-induced gout occurs, it is usually treated with a urate-lowering drug such as allopurinol. Other drugs causing gout include – pyrazinamide, aspirin, testosterone.
