Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a spinal procedure wherein spinal fusion of L5/S1 pr L4/L5 is usually performed. Anterior access is usually preferred owing to a better superior view of the vertebrae while avoiding damage to posterior trunk wall musculature. A transabdominal or a retroperitoneal approach for the surgery is generally preferred. In addition, postoperative complications associated with this procedure are minimal.
