A large South Indian cohort study of over 2,400 women has revealed that early gestational diabetes mellitus (EGDM) — diagnosed before 24 weeks — is linked to poorer maternal and neonatal outcomes than late GDM (LGDM). Women with EGDM had higher BMI, older age, and needed more intensive therapy, including metformin and insulin. Importantly, they faced over twice the risk of preterm birth and higher rates of low birth weight infants. These findings underscore the critical need for early screening and aggressive management of glucose abnormalities in pregnancy to improve outcomes for both mother and child.
