Acute kidney injury (AKI) can affect about 10% of hospitalized patients and may increase the risk for illness and death. So far, management and treatment outcomes in AKI patients discharged home from an emergency department are not well described. This article outlines the clinical findings of a recent study- the first of its kind- that describes the characteristics and outcomes in patients with AKI. AKI causes significant morbidity and mortality in the community and clinic.
