Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common type of healthcare acquired infections and associated with high morbidity and mortality. The substantial and irrational use of antibiotics worldwide has led to multidrug resistance (MDR). Thus, developing new antibiotics is being stressed on by FDA. The following article elaborates the already existing antibiotics, emerging therapies in Phase II, Phase III trials for complicated UTI (cUTI). Introduction: To be effective, antibacterials need to overcome the MDR.

Many of these drugs lack full spectrum activity. Thus, understanding the pathogenesis of UTI and genetic engineering would help in developing new drugs to combat these infections.
