Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a known metabolic disorder caused by the altered functioning of pancreatic beta cells. A sedentary lifestyle and a high-calorie diet have been predisposed to cause hyperglycemia. Back in the 1970s, excessive sugar and fat were considered detrimental to the production of insulin by the pancreatic cells. The role of sugar consumption has been established in the development of diabetes. On the other hand, fat consumption is now being considered as protective against T2DM according to recent research conducted at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland.
