The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new antiretroviral drug. The drug was approved for HIV patients who have tried multiple HIV medications but with a limited or no positive outcome. The USFDA recently approved fostemsavir, a novel antiretroviral drug for HIV patients who could not be successfully treated with other therapies due to multiple factors such as resistance, intolerance, or safety concerns.

The safety and efficacy of fostemsavir were evaluated in a trial that involved 371 patients with HIV. The patients were administered with the drug, orally, two times a day. Adult patients with a continuous presence of high levels of virus (HIV-RNA) in their blood, despite being on antiretroviral drugs, were selected for the trial.
