Highlights Altered gut microbiota plays a role in reducing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a process of altering the gut microbiota by transplanting a complex microbial population in IBS patients. The present study aimed to assess the effect of FMT delivered through a single colonoscopy in patients with IBS. FMT resulted in an altered gut microbiota that provided only transient symptomatic relief. Use of single FMT via colonoscopy as a treatment of IBS mat not be recommended.
