Previously healthy 1-year old girl was admitted with a 4-day history of fever, erythema, and swelling of the left third finger. She received cefazolin as bacterial cellulitis was suspected. However, fever persisted over the next 36 hours. Her fingers had visible vesicle and fingertip had become pale. Gingival inflammation and tongue lesions were noted.
Her parents mentioned that the child often sucked fingers. Can this be Herpes Simplex Virus infection? *This case is from Docplexus editorial team for educative purpose only. Source: NEJM Stay Connected, the answer will be posted in the next 48!
