The USFDA has recently approved oral medication for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding due to uterine fibroids in premenopausal women. The approved product is a combination of estrogen and progestin, consisting of elagolix and estradiol/norethindrone acetate (E2/NETA). Uterine leiomyomas or fibroids are estrogen and progesterone-dependent non-cancerous uterine benign tumors.
They are found in women of reproductive age, affecting up to 70 percent of Caucasian women. Uterine fibroids are managed through surgery (hysterectomy, myomectomy), endometrial ablation, uterine artery embolization, oral contraceptives, progestins, selective progesterone receptor modulators, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists and antagonists.
