Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is the commonest cause of secondary amenorrhea. It is a form of chronic anovulation that is due to unidentifiable organic causes. The current article describes the 2017 clinical practice guidelines on FHA stated by the endocrine society.
Secondary amenorrhea is generally defined as the absence of menstruation for 3 months and it mainly observed in approximately 3–5 % of adult women. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine states that FHA is responsible for 20–35 % of secondary amenorrhea cases and approximately 3 % of FHA cases of primary amenorrhea.
