Every year India produces about 50,000 doctors. Half of them come from five states. Rest of the doctors come from 24 states and seven union territories. In total, 9.29 lakh doctors are registered with the Indian Medical Registrar in India. This makes India the largest creator of doctors in the world.
Yet India is facing a huge shortage of doctors. India’s doctor-patient population ratio which is one doctor for every 1,674 patients is worse than Vietnam, Algeria, and Pakistan. The shortage of doctors is despite the increase in medical colleges, from 23 in 1947 to 398 at the end of 2014. Source: healthanalyticsindia What strategies are needed to tackle this problem?
