It is indeed a proud moment for all the Indians as Dr . Soumya Swaminathan, director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, has been appointed as Deputy Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the second-highest position at the UN’s health agency .

The new WHO leadership team represents 14 countries, including all WHO regions, and more than 60% women. According to WHO Director-General, “Every WHO member state gets a chance to nominate a candidate for the deputy’s post and it was India’s turn this year." Source: Hindustan Times
