The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 46,000 deaths by suicide in the year 2020. Suicide was also the leading cause of death among teens. Studies and investigations suggest that most suicidal patients were seeking help from healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the year before their deaths.
This highlighted the crucial role of HCPs in identifying at-risk patients, furthering the need for proper training and equipment for suicide prevention. In 2012, the Washington state became the first to require a suicide prevention training program for HCPs, which was developed by the University of Washington.
