IMA has advised doctors to STRICTLY follow guidelines while prescribing antibiotics. Alarmed due to antibiotic resistance, IMA has made a policy on antibiotic prescriptions. IMA has advised doctors to restrict the antibiotics use for proven bacterial infections. Antibiotic cover or prophylactic antibiotic should not be prescribed without a high degree of clinical suspicion. Antibiotics should not be prescribed for small bowel diarrhea, fever with cough and cold, dengue, chikungunya, malaria, and fever with rashes.
While writing prescription, doctors should write the antibiotic in a box to differentiate it from other drugs in the prescription. Patient should be clearly instructed that there will be no refill of antibiotic prescription without signature of the doctor. The role of antibiotics should be discussed in an informed consent.
