A recent study reveals that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus ( T2DM ) show a significant reduction in double-negative (CD4-CD8-) NKT-like cells , a subpopulation critical to antimicrobial and antitumor immune defenses. Even moderately elevated glucose levels were strongly correlated with this immunological depletion—independent of body mass index. These findings shed light on why T2DM patients face increased infection and cancer risks and underline the need for stringent glycemic control and further research into personalized immune-modulating therapies for metabolic disease.
