"Thyroid deficiency" and consequent tretment with thyroxin is on the increase amongst all age groups. Question: Were we missing it all these years? Or, is it really on the increase? If on the increase, what are the reasons? Most cases do not present with classical symptoms of goitre. They are often autoimmune or inflmmatory in etiology.

Could it be the widespred use of Iodosed salt that is providing way above the required levels of iodine? Would we see a reduction in we return to plain salt, except in endemic goitre areas? One pointer is this quote from a National Institutes of Health publication:  "Can iodine be harmful? Yes, if you get too much. Getting high levels of iodine can cause some of the same symptoms as iodine deficiency, including goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland). High iodine intakes can also cause thyroid gland  inflammation  and thyroid cancer."   (highlighting mine)…
