Polio was hyperendemic in India with an average of 500 to 1000 children suffering from the disease daily. Even after the introduction of trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) in 1979 under Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), polio was still a looming threat due to low efficacy of tOPV against type 1 and type 3 strains. Many different campaigns, awareness drives and other such initiatives were being carried out like: The 2004 annual pulse polio vaccination campaigns conducted 10 times each year in that era. The complete replacement from tOPV to Bivalent OPV (bOPV) and removal of Type 2 component thus reducing the chances of Type 2 outbreak.
