A study has revealed alarmingly low mammography rates in India, with only 1.3% of women aged 45 and above undergoing breast cancer screening. Among women aged 45–59, the prevalence was 1.7%, while it dropped to 0.9% in those aged 60 and older. The data, derived from 35,083 women aged 45 and above, also highlighted significant inter-state disparities. Kerala reported the highest uptake at 4.5%, followed by Karnataka at 2.9%.

In contrast, Nagaland reported zero uptake, with Andhra Pradesh at 0.1% and Uttarakhand at 0.27%. These figures are significantly lower than the 4.5% average in African countries, 40–60% in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and, Singapore, and 84% in European and American populations.
