India's private hospitals manage a substantial share of the country's healthcare burden, yet their contribution to medical research remains strikingly limited, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Medical Evidence. Researchers analyzed publication output from Indian hospitals between January 2021 and December 2025 using data indexed in Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The findings revealed a pronounced gap between institutions with academic affiliations and those operating without medical colleges.

Among the top 50 private hospitals without attached medical colleges, the average research output over the five-year period was 242 publications. In contrast, the top 50 hospitals with medical colleges produced an average of 1,530 publications during the same period.
