India has been at the forefront of addressing the issue of malnutrition with multiple policy initiatives that have received varied success over the years. The regional variations between states within India have a significant impact on the overall rate of malnutrition in India. Around 80% of the burden of malnutrition in India is contributed by states with >35% of prevalence such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan states and 50% of villages across the country.
