A team led by an Indian scientist at Columbia University, USA, has developed a low-cost 3D imaging technology called “projected Light Sheet Microscopy (pLSM)” to study and diagnose diseases like cancer. While currently available 3D microscopy instruments cost over $500,000 in the USA, the newly developed pLSM instrument costs less than $10,000. The pLSM instrument is also comparatively smaller, more efficient, and user-friendly than current 3D microscopy instruments.

The instrument was tested on various samples, including intact mouse brains, human brain samples from Alzheimer’s disease patients, cancer tissues, and live bacterial colonies. The lead Indian scientist emphasized that the goal was to develop an advanced 3D imaging tool for resource-limited institutions and developing countries.
