Aerobic, acid fast bacteria belonging to the genus Mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) have been collectively called as non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). They have also been known as atypical mycobacteria or mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT). These were once described as uncommon causes of human infections. But the rising population of immunocompromised individuals has thrown them into the limelight. NTM’s are ubiquitous organisms present in the environment.

They inhabit soil and water and are particularly resistant to disinfectants and high temperature. The environmental sources include aerosolized water and soil.
