Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disorder of the pancreas that can result in multiorgan failure and lead to an overall mortality of up to 20%. AP is associated with complex pathophysiologies, including calcium-mediated acinar cell injury, apoptosis, necrosis, and death. In addition, endoplasmic reticulum stress, autophagy, impaired trafficking, and intra-acinar trypsinogen activation are also hypothesized to be the primary mechanisms of pancreatitis. However, the inflammatory reactions in acute pancreatitis develop independently.
