Patient history: A 15-year-old girl presents to the accident and emergency department with lower back pain following a fall while taking part in gymnastics at school. She complains about long-term lower back discomfort. There is otherwise no significant medical history. Physical examination: She is in pain but otherwise well. There is diffuse tenderness over the lower lumbar vertebrae, but no point tenderness to suggest a fracture.
