Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP). Invasive ventilated patients (with higher mortality) should be considered as a target population for future clinical trials on new interventions to reduce mortality of SCAP. Patients with SCAP and life threatening acute respiratory failure (ARF) requires IMV. But the use of IMV is associated with multiple complication, and a high mortality.
