With increasing number of patients of liver metastases due to colorectal cancer, the use of laparoscopic surgery is increasing in their management. A recent study published in JAMA Surgery , compared the outcomes of laparoscopy surgery with open surgery in patients with liver metastases due to colorectal cancer. The study revealed a higher postoperative morbidity rate in patients who underwent open-surgery (22.8%) than in patients with laparoscopy surgery (20.2%). Moreover, patients in laparoscopy group reported lesser major complications (6.7%) than in open-surgery group (8.5%).
Duration of hospitalization was also shorter in laparoscopy group patients than in open-surgery group. These results indicated the superiority of laparoscopy surgery over open-surgery in patients with liver metastases due to colorectal cancer.
