A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a pump implanted in heart failure patients. This helps the left ventricle to pump blood out of the heart. These are primarily used for patients who are suffering from certain advanced-stage cardiac diseases and are either awaiting a heart transplant or are unsuitable for heart transplants. The exact type of LVAD used depends on whether it is used as a bridge-to-transplant or a permanent option (for patients who cannot undergo a heart transplant).
