Leptospirosis is an infectious disease of humans and animals caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. The bacteria that cause leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. Epidemiology It has been reported that the yearly incidence ranges from 0.1 to 1 per 100 000 in people living in temperate areas of the world, to 10 or more per 100 000 people living in tropical climates and up to 100 or more per 100 000 people when outbreaks occur. Recent outbreaks: In 2015, there was a news of claiming 16 lives in Mumbai, India because of leptospirosis.
