Limb salvage surgery is performed in children who have a malignant tumor in a long bone in their leg or arm. Limb salvage surgery preserves the limb by removing the tumor-affected portion of the bone as well as some of the surrounding tissues. An implant, either a bone transplant or a metal prosthesis, is used to replace the missing bone.
