Lok Sabha recently passed a bill that bans commercial surrogacy and allows only close relatives to act as surrogates to needy couples. Mr. J P Nadda said, that this bill protects women from exploitation and ensures the rights of the child born through surrogacy. The bill demanded a ban on commercial surrogacy, but altruistic surrogacy will be permitted for needy infertile couples. The Surrogacy (Regulation) bill 2016 was passed after a long debate by Congress and AIADMK members over various issues.
Mr. Nadda said that many concerns about commercial surrogacy were addressed and then this decision was taken. India has become a hub for commercial surrogacy and surrogate mothers are exploited.
