Over the last three decades, the fungal infections have increased to large extent and expected to cause higher mortality in coming years. Invasive infections like candidiasis, cryptococcosis, aspergillosis and pneumocystosis are the most life-threatening. The most commonly used antifungal such as azole have been found to be ineffective (resistance problem). Another issue is drug-drug interactions. On the other hand, the systemic antifungals (amphotericin-B) are shown to have high toxicity.

This warrants the need of more effective and safer antifungal to be developed by pharma companies. How do you make a choice of antifungals for invasive dermal infections? Source: Del Poeta, Maurizio. "Special Issue: Novel Antifungal Drug Discovery." (2016): 33.
