Choice of sedation and airway management are among unresolved issues in the perioperative management of thrombectomy. Some clinicians prefer general anaesthesia to avoid patient anxiety, agitation while others favour conscious sedation to reduce operation time, and ventilation associated complication. This article reports the study which assessed whether conscious sedation was superior than general anaesthesia for neurological improvement in acute ischemic stroke patients receiving thrombectomy.
Several randomized clinical trials and the meta-analysis of the available data have suggested that thrombectomy using stent retrievers combined with standard treatment is more effective than standard treatment alone for severe acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion.
