With increased incidence of antibiotic resistance, antibiotic prophylaxis before orthopedic surgery has to be done with a lot of caution. The success of antibiotic prophylaxis lies in three different components, the timing of prophylaxis, duration of prophylaxis   and the type of antibiotic. The article provides some recommendations for the practicing orthopedic surgeons for better management of trauma or elective surgery patient in this regard.
