Dietary habits can significantly affect acid-base ratio and influence progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Studies have shown that reducing dietary acid load and following alkaline diet helps patients with CKD. This article gives an overview of how alkaline diet is better and discusses the potential benefits of it. Diet is a major determining factor of acid load in the body which kidneys must excrete to maintain acid-base balance.

In earlier times, humans used to consume less acidic foods but the modern diets are largely acid-inducing and hence kidneys are not very well adapted to these diets. This may have contributed to modern epidemics of chronic diseases, including CKD. A recent study has shown that among people CKD patients, those who consumed a high acid diet had three times higher risk of kidney failure than those who consumed a low acid diet.
