As per 2020 data, nearly 65.5% of the Indian population resides in rural locations with limited access to healthcare services. Illiteracy, ignorance, lack of communication, and poor socioeconomic status are the various health barriers that add to the disease burden amongst these populations. To address the gross disparity in access to quality healthcare between the urban and rural sectors of India, the National Medical Council (NMC) has included a mandatory “Family Adoption Program” in the MBBS curriculum, to be followed from 2022 onwards, applicable to medical students admitted to the course in February 2022.
