Management of Inherited and sporadic medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a challenge for clinicians. Inherited MTC syndromes (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, MEN 2) affect approximately 1 in 30,000 individuals and consist of MEN 2A (Sipple’s syndrome), familial MTC (FMTC), and MEN 2B. This article discusses the American Thyroid Society’s recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of MTC. Medullary thyroid cancer is the third most common type of thyroid cancer with overall 10-year survival rates of 90%.
