The Medical Council of India (MCI), in Sept 2016, has amended the Indian Medical Council Regulations (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) in clause 1.5 in relation to the use of the generic name of the drug while writing a prescription. It also issued the model prescription format for the registered medical practitioner. The story behind this amendment started in 2013. A pharmacist from Telangana state wrote a letter to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with a request that doctors be directed to write the prescription in CAPITAL LETTERS ONLY .

With no response from MCI, he filed this issue with Andra Pradesh High Court, where the court felt this cause genuine and directed the MCI to genuinely look into the issue.
