Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is generally associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and higher risk for cardiovascular diseases and is prevalent in obese patients. However, a small population of non-obese patients (predominantly Asian population) with relatively normal body mass index (BMI) has NAFLD. This article provides a synopsis of the study which determined the severity and the factors associated with NAFLD in obese and non-obese patients. NAFLD is one the most common liver diseases in the world.
NAFLD may progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
