The researchers in the USA have devised a new diagnostic test that can effectively distinguish patients with celiac disease (CD) form non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). This novel blood test measures circulating cytokines in the plasma within 6 hours of consuming gluten-containing diet. The investigators reported that oral-gluten challenge leads to dramatic increase in interleukin (IL)-8 , IL-10 , and most predominantly IL-2 in CD patients. Surprisingly, no such measurable immune response was reported in patients with NCGS after gluten challenge.

However, NCGS patients developed classical symptoms after consumptions of FODMAP carbohydrates especially fructans.
