In different cases of brain maladies, drug delivery to the brain becomes very critical. It is a very complicated process which has to consider the complex anatomy of the brain. Drug-delivery is further complicated by the intricate restrictions due to the blood-brain barrier. During the treatment of central nervous system diseases, drugs are used to treat a variety of the conditions. These drugs are usually administered through the nose.
The delivery of the drugs is hindered due to the presence of bone as well as dura/arachnoid membrane which forms the part of the blood-brain barrier. Thus, the diffusion of drugs through the blood-brain is restricted reducing the effectiveness of the drug and increased complications.
