Scientists in Beijing have claimed to have developed a new gene therapy that can help delay aging in mice and extend their lifespan. They have stated that the trial may one day contribute to a similar kind of treatment in humans. The study published in the journal Science Translation Medical reported that the gene kat7 is a key contributor to aging; inactivating this gene could delay aging. The study conducted on mice revealed that inactivation of kat7 leads to six to eight months of overall improved appearance and grip strength.
The mice also showed an extended lifespan of about 25%. Out of the 100 genes identified from around 10,000 genes found in mammals, kat7 was the most efficient at contributing to aging.
