Healthcare management is increasingly focused on long-term outcomes of any treatments and procedures. One such study which focuses on long-term effects of nitrous oxide suggests that its use is safe for the long term in non-cardiac surgical patients who also may show signs of cardiovascular diseases. It is suspected that the pathophysiological effects of nitrous oxide might lead to major cardiovascular events after non-cardiac surgery.
The scientists had performed long-term follow-up of the Evaluation of Nitrous Oxide in the Gas Mixture for Anesthesia (ENIGMA) which suggested that nitrous oxide may increase risk of myocardial infarction. But, that trial did not specifically recruit patients at risk of cardiovascular events.
