Overweight and obesity affect millions of children and over 40% of the adult population globally. In addition, both have been linked to high free sugar intake, leading to diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), a leading cause of mortality globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) has responded by advising to cut back on the consumption of free sugars. As part of global efforts to combat the epidemic of obesity and related disorders, several initiatives are being attempted to minimize the consumption of free sugars.
As a result, the use of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) has increased since the introduction of updated WHO guidance on free sugar intake in 2015.
