In India, the commonest practice is reuse of prescriptions. Medicines written once are being dispensed and used again and again without even bother to consult the doctor on regular basis. I am sure all the doctors must be facing this day in day out. I do not understand then what the logic of writing quantity in prescription is?

Most of the patients especially chronic disease patients like heart disease, hypertension or diabetes where regular follow is crucial and dose adjustments may be necessary from time to time, do not visit a doctor, just from a friendly neighborhood chemist keep on purchasing and consuming medicines. To the extent that some of them may stop medicines on their own under the pretext of “course completed".
